What scares you?

Safety: It's a good thing, right?

Most of the time, yes. We like safety. We don't put our hands on lit stove tops, we don't walk in front of oncoming traffic, we don't go outside in the snow without a winter coat.

But what if the pursuit of comfort is holding us back? If you're constantly safe, surrounded by your creature comforts in a place where nothing ever goes wrong or makes you uncomfortable, how can you ever hope to grow?

I'll tell you one thing that scares me: Typing this to all of you.

Blogging my thoughts scares me.

Sharing my books with the world scares me.

After all, what if you think they're foolish? Or no good?

But a funny thing happens when we do the things that scare us: We grow. We learn. We feel alive.

Over the past three years, I've learned how to not only write children's books, but also to find and work with talented artists who can bring my stories to life. I've learned how to publish those stories and illustrations and market them to the readers who will love them just as much as I do. I've met amazing people along the way and opened new doors for myself and others.

I am filled with gratitude.

And the best part is, I want to keep learning and growing. I want to keep feeling scared, because when I feel scared I know I'm on the verge of something good.

So I'll leave you with this quote from former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Thanks for tuning in.

Love,

Hil
